Helping Your Child Read

While accepting his American Film Institute Lifetime Achievement Award, Sean Connery, the infamous James Bond, announced that he had gotten his biggest break at the age of five.  “You see,” he said, “at age five I learned to read.  It’s that simple. It’s that profound.  Had it not been for all the wonderful books, scripts, and plays I’ve read over the years, I would not be standing before you today.”  He credited his family as being his first teacher and helping to instill in him the love and joy of reading.

We, as parents, are indeed our children’s first and most important teachers.  Research has proven that children learn about reading long before entering school.  The job of parents is to foster a love of books and words.  Try these quick and simple ideas to make reading a lifelong gift for your child.

  • Read aloud with your child.  This is ultimately the most important thing you can do.  It is never too late to start and make it a habit!
  • Have plenty of reading material in the house.
  • Model reading by being a reader yourself.
  • Discuss what you read with your child.
  • Allow your child time for independent reading.
  • Establish a daily reading time.

Read with your child every day and you are both winners.  It’s that simple.  It’s that profound
